DVSJA Client Has Sentence Reduced & Lifetime Parole Removed
Our client had been victimized since childhood, culminating in an abusive relationship in which her partner controlled her with drugs. She pled guilty to felony murder after her drug dealer killed her partner in a botched robbery, and she was sentenced to a prison term of 20 years to life. Our office filed a motion pursuant to the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, detailing how, at the time of the underlying crime, she was a victim of abuse that was a significant contributing factor to her criminal behavior. The court agreed, reducing her prison sentence by 3 years and removing lifetime parole.
